How Far & Small Can Thermal Cameras Measure?- The Detection Range

2020-07-28 11:30

For infrared thermal camera, a lot of people have this question, how far can infrared thermal camera see? However, the detection distance of infrared thermal camera is affected by many factors, which are described below.

1. Lens Focal Length

The lens focal length of infrared thermal camera is the most important factor to determine the detection distance, which determines the detection object

The size of the image, i.e. it occupies several pixels on the focal plane. Usually expressed in terms of spatial resolution (IFOV), it refers to the ability of thermal camera to recognize the minimum distance between two adjacent targets.

Spatial resolution = pixel size/lens focal length

Pixel occupied by object = object size/(detection distance * spatial resolution)

= (object size * lens focal length)/(detection distance * pixel size)

It can be seen from the above formula that the larger the focal length of the lens, the more pixels occupied by the object on the focal plane, and the farther the detection distance.

2. Detector Performance

The focal length of the lens determines the size of the image and the number of pixels occupied, while the performance of the detector determines the image

Like quality, such as clarity, noise, etc. The performance of the detector in thermal sensitivity, signal processing and so on, determines the quality of the image. If the thermal sensitivity of detector is not high, the method of increasing aperture should be adopted to improve the image effect.

3. Atmospheric Environment

Infrared radiation has a stronger penetrating ability to the atmosphere than visible light, but atmospheric attenuation, heat dissipation and other thermal camera

Image will have a certain influence, especially fog, rain and snow weather, will affect the thermal imaging detection range.

Above, visible and infrared images taken on foggy days and rainy days are closer than normal and have some effect on the clarity of the image.

The detection distance of infrared thermal camera is mainly affected by the above three factors, and appropriate infrared thermal camera is selected according to different scene requirements.
