Infrared thermal imaging testing for non-destructive testing of ceramics

2023-12-08 09:24

Ceramic is an important cultural inheritance and daily necessities, and its production and testing history can be traced back to ancient China thousands of years ago. However, with the development of science and technology and the continuous improvement of people's requirements for the quality and performance of ceramics, traditional artificial ceramic detection methods are susceptible to visual fatigue and subjective factors of inspectors, and it is difficult to ensure the accuracy and stability of detection, which has been difficult to meet the needs of modern industry and art.

The specific goal of non-destructive testing of ceramic materials is to detect the defects such as cracks, pores, caking and inclusions that are unfavorable to the performance. The difficulty of it is that the defects to be detected are extremely small, so the difficulty is relatively high. At present, there are several commonly used methods to detect ceramic defects. This paper mainly introduces the use of infrared thermal imager for ceramic nondestructive testing.

In infrared thermal imaging non-destructive testing, when an object is thermally excited, heat will be transferred inside it. When there are defects inside the object, it will change the heat conduction characteristics of the surface of the object, and the change of the heat conduction characteristics will lead to the change of the heat distribution, so that the temperature of the surface of the object will be different. By measuring the infrared radiation energy of the surface of the ceramic material, the surface temperature distribution is converted into a thermal imaging map. Through the temperature distribution of the thermal imaging map, whether there are defects in the tested sample and the existence of defects can be judged.

Advantages of infrared thermal imaging testing for ceramic non-destructive testing:

1, Fast response to temperature changes, high sensitivity, accurate temperature measurement, fast detection speed

2, easy to use, simple operation

3, the use of non-contact temperature measurement, will not cause any damage to the ceramic

4, the test results are immediately visible, the staff can view at any time

5, the temperature data of infrared thermal imaging can be automatically saved for staff to view and analyze.

Disadvantages of infrared thermal imaging testing for ceramic non-destructive testing:

1, affected by product surface and background radiation

2, sensitivity is affected by the size and depth of the defect,

3, the size and shape of the defect can not be measured very accurately

Infrared thermal imaging instrument for ceramic non-destructive testing has the advantages of non-contact, fast, accurate, and so on, and will be more and more widely used with the development of infrared thermal imaging non-destructive testing technology.
